Metro Day

6/25

It was a metro day with a painful ending. First we took the T2 to go to La Defense, switched  to another line and then another line to arrive at Notre Dame. There were flying buttresses galore, but our lady did not look so good after the devastating fire. The cathedral was a burnt out shell of its former self. Then, back on the metro and after a series of transfers, we popped out at Sacre Couer. We were like moles. traveling underground and then popping out into the sun and the heat to see another beautiful site. (France was having an unrivaled heat wave).  Sacré Coeur was lovely and had amazing vistas. Lunch was a delicious smoked salmon sandwich. Back into the metro and off we went to the Arc de Triomphe. Cool structure. Back into the metro with two switches we were back in Bezons for dinner. Ilana whipped us up a stirfry.

That evening, back in the metro and three switches later we were arriving at the Eiffel Tower station for sunset.  As we exited, an official stopped us to see our passes. We proudly presented them to him. He then pulled us aside and told us we have to pay a $200 fine! What?! Our passes did not have our photos on them. We, of course, had no idea that the passes required photos. No one told us about photos. So, we argued with him for 30 minutes. Finally he reduced the fine to €70 or about $82. We paid it so that we can get on with our evening. But, after that, the Eiffel tower’s shimmering lights, albeit mesmerizing, didn’t shine quite as brightly after that unfortunate experience.
